This monument to the beloved husband of Queen Victoria celebrates Albert as a patron of the arts, science and industry. Its enormous cost (about £10m today) was met by public donations.
Amazing art! This memorial goes some way to explaining how Victoria felt about Albert – it's so different to what you would normally find in London. Mesmerising.
It was designed shortly after Albert’s death by George Gilbert Scott (who was later knighted) and completed in 1872, although the central statue of Prince Albert was not placed upon it until 1876
