Until the 19th century there was a building here used over time as a prison, a place where taxes were paid and a site of public execution. Locals used to spit here as a sign of rejection for it
Placed at the doorway of the old Tollbooth is the dirtiest place in Edinburgh, people used to spit on it to show disdain (as they got out), now people spit for good luck and the chance to come back
